How to live well with social media

In the age of modern technology, social media has become a part of daily life for people all over the world. While it can be a great tool for connecting with friends and family, it can also be overwhelming and time-consuming. To help you make the most out of your social media experience, here are some tips and tricks to live well with social media. 

Create boundaries 

One of the best ways to live well with social media is to create boundaries around how much time you spend on it. Set yourself limits on how often you check your accounts and stick to them! You don’t have to delete your accounts altogether, but by limiting yourself, you’ll have more time for activities that make you happier in the long run. 

Unfollow people who don’t bring you joy 

Social media should bring joy into your life, not take away from it. If there are people who post content that makes you feel like you’re inadequate, down or anxious, consider unfollowing them. It’s ok to take breaks from certain accounts if they no longer bring anything positive into your life. 

Engage mindfully 

Social media can be a great way to connect with friends and family, but remember that everything you post will stay online forever. Before posting something online, ask yourself if this is something that you would want everyone in your life, past or present, to see? If not, it’s best to refrain from posting it at all! Additionally, think twice before engaging in heated conversations online. Remember that words have power and always speak kindly when responding to others online. 

Social media use can have a negative effect on mental health, particularly if it’s not used in a balanced way or if users are exposed to too much negativity online. Studies have consistently linked excessive use of social media with increased levels of depression and anxiety among young adults, while those who spend time engaging in activities such as exercise or reading physical books tend to report lower levels of depression and improved overall well-being.  This is why it is so important to limit social media use, and be mindful of how you feel when scrolling through your social feeds.
